Travelling to India with Pastor Raj has given us a connection with another small, poor, forgotten community in Ghana. Shalom People’s Church is in the Nsakina district of Accra and runs a free school for 250 children. 70% of the children are orphans or being raised by a single parent with no access to welfare benefits. Most of the orphans have been taken in by people from the church who are in some way related to them and others from the church support them. Currently there are 8 children living at the school because the church has been unable to find a living relative to take them in (child protection laws prevent them from taking in a child who is not a relative, but there is no provision in Nsakina for orphans).
Graham and Pastor Raj have visited Accra several times, and we have supported them in some one-off projects such as flushing toilets and a water bore-hole to provide clean drinking water.
At our AGM in May 2026 we agreed to cover the costs of feeding one of the orphans living at the school 3 times a day through a monthly gift of £80.
Proper accommodation for the orphans
The current church and school premises are full of activity every day, and what they do for the local community mainly through volunteers is amazing. But there is a real need to support orphaned children who come to the school with proper dormitory-style accommodation as well as extending the premises to provide more space for the older children. The plot of land next to the school is for sale, and Pastor Isaac’s dream is to purchase this land and build in four stages an extension to the ground level of the school with dormitory accommodation for orphaned children above it. To begin this project, the land next door to the school would currently cost £27,000. Purchasing the land opens up many local funding options to build the school extension and dormitory accommodation in stages. Can you help us begin this project?
