MISSION TO SLOVAKIA

Since 2016 God has led us to build a close relationship with Zoe Church, a Roma church made up of people mainly from Slovakia.  As well as partnering with them as an associate congregation to run a warm hub for Roma families on Wednesday nights at Ozzy Road church building,

We have also spent many years visiting Slovakia with them which has given us the great privilege of gaining a little understanding of the way which Roma people are treated, including close relatives of our Roma friends in Derby.

Currently we are developing our link with the Roma people in and around Sabinov, where Pastor Marek who leads Zoe Church comes from.  We have made several joint mission trips to visit and encourage Roma churches in the area, give out food parcels to those most in need and preach in the street about God’s love for all people.  We have raised funds through special collections at Zoe Church, donations from Derby Urban Church and a fundraising Slovakian meal including Marek and Hedviga’s testimony of being forcible moved into hidden terrible accommodation in Sabinov.  

Other than being prevented from travelling due to the Covid lockdown, we have been building relationships with Roma people in Slovakia and Czech Republic for nearly 10 years now.  This has included preaching in churches, house churches and in the street as well as initiatives such as teaching a group of women to sew and providing material and sewing machines to enable them to start a social enterprise.  We are so thankful to God for this journey, and the way in which our Roma friends have enhanced the life of our church.
